The Year Ahead, Luxury SectionThe Year Ahead is a special issue by Bloomberg Businessweek that is always one of the first to publish in the new year, and consists of predictions and thoughts on what's to come. The beginning of 2023 felt bleak; and the opinions that came to mind when brainstorming visuals were that this year would be chaotic, and that the amount of news needed to be included in the issue felt overwhelming. The idea of too much news resulted in the issue design template becoming a retro inspired powerpoint interface, winking at the idea of us presenting a ton of information in quick succession. The Year Ahead is always split into different sections, and since the word chaotic kept coming up in design chats, the art direction team decided the powerpoint would be the visual constant in the issue, and each section would be assigned to one art director to do with as they please. My section was luxury. Unlike most of the other sections (economics, tech, etc.) the outlook of luxury in 2023 was actually forecasted positively. Because of this I ran with the retro looking template and created an extravagant, bright, and campy section. I started with embracing the visual motifs I first thought of when thinking of luxury cliches, like script fonts and the color pink, and let that instinct go wild. The result is an unapologetically opulent section, an intentional departure from the doom and gloom the other sections possess.
